About this reader

This is the twelfth-generation Kindle Paperwhite, the 2024 release, and we stock the 16 GB model without ads — the lock screen shows your book, not a promotion. That is the difference worth checking before you compare prices, because the cheaper listings elsewhere are almost always the ad-supported one. The screen is 7 inches at 300 ppi, with a front light you can shift from white through to amber. In bright sun it stays readable because it is not a backlit panel; in the dark you can warm it down so it is not the last bright thing you look at. Amazon quotes 25% faster page turns than the previous generation and a higher contrast ratio. Battery is the part that changes how you use it. A single charge is quoted at up to twelve weeks at half an hour of reading a day, and a full charge takes about two and a half hours on a 9 W USB-C adaptor. In practice you stop thinking about charging it, which is not something you can say about a tablet. It is rated IPX8 — tested for immersion in 2 metres of fresh water for 60 minutes — so the bath and the poolside are genuinely fine. It weighs 211 grams and is 7.8 mm thick, holds 16 GB of books, and connects over 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. What it does not have is the rest of a tablet. No social media, no notifications, no apps competing for the page you are on. In the box: the Kindle, a USB-C charging cable and the quick start guide.

A screen you can read in the sun

The 7 inch Paperwhite display runs at 300 ppi with a built-in front light, and it is not a backlit panel — which is why it holds up outdoors where a phone becomes a mirror. The front light shifts from white through to amber, so the same device works at noon by a window and at midnight without waking anyone. This generation adds a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.

Twelve weeks, not twelve hours

A single charge is quoted at up to twelve weeks based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off. Charging takes roughly two and a half hours on a 9 W USB-C adaptor. The practical effect is that charging stops being a habit you have to keep.

Rated for the bath, not just splashes

IPX8, tested to survive immersion in 2 metres of fresh water for 60 minutes. That is a real rating rather than a water-resistant hint. It weighs 211 grams and is 7.8 mm thick, so holding it one-handed for an hour is not the exercise a hardback is.

Without ads, and why that matters

The listing we stock is the ad-free model. On the ad-supported version the lock screen carries sponsored promotions and there is a banner on the home screen; here the lock screen shows the cover of what you are reading.

Before you buy

Does this version show adverts?

No. We stock the ad-free model, so the lock screen shows your book rather than sponsored promotions. The cheaper listings elsewhere are usually the ad-supported one.

How long does the battery actually last?

Up to 12 weeks on a single charge, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off. A full charge takes about 2.5 hours on a 9 W USB-C adaptor.

Can I read it in the bath?

Yes. It is rated IPX8, tested for immersion in 2 metres of fresh water for 60 minutes.

Is a plug included?

No — the box has the Kindle, a USB-C charging cable and the quick start guide. Any USB-C adaptor will charge it; a 9 W one gives the 2.5 hour figure.

How much does it hold?

16 GB on the device, which is thousands of books, plus free cloud storage for your Amazon content.

Can I read it outdoors?

Yes. The display is not backlit, so direct sun does not wash it out, and the front light adjusts from white to amber for low light.

Bought the ad-free one on purpose and would again. My last one had adverts on the lock screen and it niggled every single time. This one shows the book cover. The amber light at night is the other thing I did not expect to care about and now use constantly. Battery genuinely goes weeks — I charge it about once a month.

  • Ian F.Verified buyer

Read it in the bath for a fortnight, no drama. IPX8 is not marketing — it has been dunked, splashed and read in the rain on a campsite. Page turns are noticeably quicker than my old Paperwhite, which I did not think I would notice until I did. Light enough to hold up in bed one-handed.

  • Sam O.Verified buyer

It does one thing and that is the point. No apps, no notifications, nothing pulling you off the page. I read more in the first month than in the previous six on my phone. Docking a star only because 16 GB is far more than I will ever need and I would rather have paid less for 8.

  • Deborah W.Verified buyer

Excellent reader, but check what you are buying. No complaints about the device at all. But the listings are a maze — with ads, without ads, with and without a Kindle Unlimited trial, three colours — and it is very easy to order the wrong one. This seller was clear about which it is, which is why I am not marking it lower. Also there is no charger in the box, just the cable.
